Last month I started as an intern developer in SwarmOnline’s Edinburgh office. After spending a couple of months with the team I can give some insight into the business and what it’s like to work for Swarm.
One of the biggest benefits that come with working for Swarm is that you get to work on a range of projects and using a wide variety of technologies. Smaller companies can be more flexible in the way that they work on projects resulting in developers working on the front end and back end technologies. For example, the project I am working on just now has a website, a mobile app, an API, and a content management system. Developers are able to become full stack multi-discipline programmers who will have a good understanding of the entire project. It also helps keep things interesting as you keep learning more and more.
Working here hasn’t been like your typical office job – in the Edinburgh office we even have our very own bar! The dress code is a little more relaxed and we sometimes have ‘Fat Fridays’, where we eat pizza and fast food.
Although I have only been here for two months, I have learned so much in a very short space of time. The rest of the team are there to offer support when I require it. The team holds fortnightly ‘Toolbox Talks’ where one member of the team gets up and talks about a topic that they have researched or is knowledgeable in. I have found these sessions have really enhanced my learning. Some recent talks have been ‘An introduction to React Native’ and ‘An introduction to iOS Development in Swift’. These talks are highly valuable when looking to expand your skill set.
So far my journey with Swarm has been challenging and rewarding. Now I’m looking forward to finding out what else it has in store for me!
